The barn was built after the owner and farmer Johan Beukeboom obtained his permit. The fire brigade had initially refused their permission, even after a demonstration of the fire safety of untreated straw bales. While the demonstration did not cover all fire hazard hazards, it did show that compactly packed straw bales are difficult to light. Even with a regular gas burner it was practically impossible to set fire to the straw bales.
