This house is part of the “Schoonschip” project: a floating eco-village in Amsterdam North. Very progressive experiments are being conducted here in the fields of energy, raw materials recycling and mobility.
The basis for the construction is a floating concrete container on which the timber frame rests. The walls consist of many partitions filled with straw bales, straight from the farmer; a sturdy straw construction system conceived by Erik Wesselius and further refined by architect Hans Kuijpers. A large greenhouse is attached to the house, made of old used greenhouse parts.
The outside of the straw facade is covered with gypsum fiber board and larch facade cladding.
