URBAN STRAW – Fire protection conditioning of blow-in straw for building insulation of urban building classes 4 and 5

Written by esba

The common motivation and vision of the consortium is to establish straw insulation as a common, commercially available insulation material for urban multi-storey building projects. Insulation materials made from renewable raw materials still have a low market share of approx. 4-5% in Europe, but the trend is increasing. According to a study by the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer Institute “More than just insulation – additional benefits of insulating materials made from renewable raw materials”, one reason for this is the building authority requirements that limit the use of flammable building materials, especially standard flammable building materials, for fire protection reasons. Hardly flammable building materials have a much larger area of application, for example as thermal insulation systems for facades in building classes 4 and 5.

The goals to decarbonise the construction sector resulting from the Paris climate agreement, however, require the increased use of renewable construction and insulation materials, even in multi-storey buildings in the urban environment – both in new construction, building extensions and in renovation.

It is therefore obvious to transfer the known benefits of straw as building insulation material from annual rapidly regrowing grain plants concerning low energy consumption in production, regional availability, CO2 absorption from the atmosphere and its recyclability, from ecological single-family house constructions to multi-storey urban construction projects. The scaling effect of the area of application in large-volume, multi-storey building projects allows a significantly higher efficiency to be achieved in the sustainable decarbonisation of the construction sector. The user-friendly implementation of blow-in straw into the automated production of prefabricated elements is of particular importance in terms of construction management aspects.

The aim of the “Urban Straw” project is to condition a technically approved and certified blow-in straw injection insulation currently featuring Euroclass “E – standard flammable” in such a way that it achieves the category “B – hardly flammable”, as it is required by the OIB 2 guideline fire protection for urban building classes 4 and 5, without impairing the environmentally positive properties of blow-in straw through the applied additives as flame retardants and without corrupting the low-threshold technological effort of straw insulation in its production.

The European Straw Building Association is an independent European association, devoid of any profit making motive. The object of the Association is to promote and develop the use of straw, as a sustainable way of building in all the senses of the term “sustainable”: renewable, ecological, healthy, energy and climate efficient, social and economic.
The Association is a federation composed of organisations and people particularly concerned with the use of straw in buildings.
