The house was built and occupied by the owner builders Wim Mendelts and Anne Joosse. The first straw was laid by a municipal official on behalf of the mayor of the city on a Monday afternoon on September 13, 1999. Since then, the building has been slowly under construction. Because Wim and Anne mainly run the shipyard, building had to be done at the most weird moments. As a result, construction progressed slowly, but steadily.
The non-load-bearing straw bale walls are built relatively conventionally, using bamboo poles as a connecting element. The walls are finished with locally made shell lime mortar. Straw bales have also been used in the roof for insulation. The roof boxes are filled with loose straw. To avoid moisture problems, an air cavity has been installed at the top of the roof. A green roof has been placed above.
