The first Strawbale building in the UK to receive Planning Permission (not the first built!). A historic single storey home built in October 1996 for Brian Stinchcombe, farmer, of Crickhowell, Wales. Built by Barbara Jones as part of a 5 day training course, using Jumbo bales, no machinery, all moved, customised and stacked by hand. The concrete floor slab was already laid when Barbara arrived and the bales were laid directly onto this, which was not a great idea as the bottom of the bales got wet during construction when it rained – although there were no lasting moisture problems. No hazel pins were used (no need as jumbo bales are so massive). Barbara also supervised/taught the making of the wall plate which was placed on the last day of the course, and roof trusses finished on the 6th day. It was completed by Brian as a self-build.
